COVID-19-related lung inflammation is characterized by an exacerbation of the immune response in which the increase in interleukin (IL)-17, the main cytokine product of T-helper 17 cells (Th17) and the reduction of regulatory T cells (Treg) represent the predominant cellular/molecular events in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Therefore, the targeting of the Th17/Treg axis represents a new therapeutic/preventive approach for the new coronavirus.

The ground-breaking idea of the proposed project is based on the valorization of specific endemic cultivars from Italy, belonging to Mangifera indica (mango), through chemical profiling and pharmacological determination of the constituents of each selected specie/s.

We have previously demonstrated that this plant extract possesses a peculiar anti- inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, that could be expanded in terms of preclinical investigation for curative and/or preventive treatment in COVID-19.

Noteworthy, this plant is registered in the three European Union schemes of geographical indications and traditional specialities, known as protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI), and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG). The planned research activities are therefore aimed at the enhancement and recovery of biodiversity and will also be linked to the aspect of conservation of landscape and environmental resources, the preservation of genetic heritage and the enhancement of rural areas in perfect agreement with the research lines of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Finally, the active involvement of Industry in the field of herbal medicines could assure the immediate formulation of nutraceutical with potential market possibilities.
